As a purely American made genre of music, hip hop is a style that contains many different musical influences which can be identified as four main stylistic fundamentals. Those elements traditionally include DJing, breaking, MCing and graffiti. Although many of today's hip hop artists might not remember it, the earliest examples of hip hop music were once known as disco rap back in the days when The Sugarhill Gang was popular and music loops weren't even on the radar yet as far as the creation of new beats was concerned. Although sometimes referred to as rap music, hip hop doesn't necessarily require words as does rap.
