Aircraft are designed with a particular weight limit in mind while they are in flight and for something like a 747 used by a major airline the weight limit is designed to accommodate all of the passengers likely to be aboard plus all the luggage. Despite their giant size large airplanes aren't always equipped to provide the amount of support for heavy or significantly sized air cargo and this is when a specialized airplane built with hauling freight and large machinery in mind can be used. Airplanes that are built for carrying heavy objects can stand a significant amount of weight placed in their cargo holds.
