Press Kits
Even if you don't have a three-inch stack of press clippings, assembling a press kit is a
must for any musician. A press kit is a a folder containing information about your band and your music.
Here is what you'll need to present an organized and professional
press kit to a potential manager, booking agent, or record label.
Cover Letter
Your cover letter should be brief and factual. Tell the reader who you are and why you're sending your press kit. Remember to check your spelling and grammar!
Photograph:
- Black and White
- No smaller than 5x7, no larger than 8x10
- Avoid confusing or busy backgrounds
- Stand relatively close together, this protects the quality of the photo for
reproduction. Newspapers have to crop and shrink pictures to fit column widths.
Bio:
- Typed on your letterhead stationary.
- Keep it to one page
- The content should include, how long the band has been together, your style of
music, and brief resumes of your band members
- Favorable quotes from your press clippings. (If you don't have any press yet, why
not use a quote from the club booker?)
- Avoid hype; it's amateurish.
Press clippings:
- Show reviews
- CD reviews
- Reproduce the clipping on your letterhead.
Your professionally packaged demo
A business card
Optional items:
- Promo stickers, tee shirts, buttons, etc.
- One page containing 2 or 3 performance photos
- Award certificates
- Glossy posters (from major shows)
- Song list & lyric sheet
You should present the material in a sturdy folder. Make sure you include your contact
information on all items in your press kit. Unsure of how to approach industry professionals? Check out our advice on submitting demos.
